Drive Module 500GB Ultra ATA
The Apple Drive Module (ADM) is a hot-pluggable Ultra ATA hard drive in a special drive carrier module designed for easy server and RAID upgradeability and maintenance. Apple Drive Modules are available in 250GB and 500GB sizes and operates at 7200 rpm and are equipped with 8MB disk cache.
Using four 500GB ADMs, the Xserve (slot-load) can be configured with 2 terabytes of internal storage. Xserve RAID may be configured with up to fourteen drives, for up to 7 terabytes of storage. Unpopulated bays ship with a blank drive carrier which can be replaced with a drive module at any time - even if the server or RAID is running - so its easy to add storage capacity as your server and storage needs grow. Xserve RAID scales in performance and capacity with the addition of ADM hard drives.
Each ADM has two LED activity lights - one indicating drive activity and one indicating drive status. All Apple Drive Modules support SMART - Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology - allowing the hardware monitoring tools included with Xserve and Xserve RAID to monitor the status of each hard drive and report pre-failure warnings before problems occur.
RAID Management with Mac OS X Server and Xserve:
Mac OS X Server includes AppleRAID, providing RAID 0 and 1 support through software, allowing you to increase either data redundancy or performance. Xserve is able to boot from RAID volumes. Choose any combination of mirroring or striping across the four drive bays, but all RAID configurations require a minimum of two ADM hard drives.
RAID Management with Xserve RAID::
Management of Xserve RAID is provided through Apple RAID Admin, a powerful java-enabled management and monitoring tool. RAID admin allows you to securely setup and monitor Xserve RAID remotely across a local TCP/IP network or over the Internet.
RAID Set Slicing enables administrators to partition RAID sets into smaller segments to allow storage to be distributed to up to 16 servers; and RAID Set Expansion to make adding hard drives simple with no downtime. The enhanced utility also features testing and repair tools and an updated user interface.
RAID levels 0,1,3,5, and 0+1 are provided through dual hardware RAID controllers. Hardware RAID can be used in conjunction with Apple RAID software to achieve very high performance hybrid RAID levels 10, 30, and 50. Xserve RAID requires a minimum of four ADM hard drives.
Ultra ATA hard drives:
ATA hard drives combine low cost with excellent performance. Ultra ATA drives run at up to 7,200 revolutions per minute (rpm) and use a protocol that enables faster data transfer to and from the hard drive--up to 133 megabytes of data per second.
Apple Drive Module Ultra ATA Compatibility:
Apple Drive Modules with Ultra ATA drives are compatible only with slot-load Xserve and Xserve RAID. For Xserve G5 product, use the Apple Drive Module with Serial ATA only.
System Requirements:
Compatible with Xserve RAID and Xserve (slot-load). Requires Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server (version 10.4.2 or later). Xserve RAID requires update version 1.31 or later.
