The eXpurgate spam filter and e-mail categorization service is available as an external managed service, meaning eleven performs the checking and categorization of incoming e-mails on its own server. Here eXpurgate operates as an upstream e-mail server for the customer. Incoming e-mail is immediately diverted to the eleven server to be checked.
Whenever the eXpurgate mail server receives an e-mail for the customer, it is immediately checked by eXpurgate. Only after passing the check is the e-mail sent to the recipient. Generally checking causes no noticeable delay in delivery. If eXpurgate recognizes an e-mail as spam, it is marked appropriately and – depending on the customer’s preference – rejected, filed in a quarantine folder or sent to a central address at the company (such as spam@company.com).
Installing eXpurgate.ASP takes no great effort on the customer’s part. Companies only need to adjust their DNS entry (MX record) on the DNS server. Using a web interface, customers can always individually define how e-mails in various categories are to be handled. In this way even legal pornographic newsletters, for example, and legitimate advertising can be filtered out by customers before they reach the inbox (see also: eXpurgate filter options).
The Web interface also provides the customer with a comprehensive range of statistical functions that can, for example, show the current day’s level of incoming spam, the levels of spam in comparison with other categories or the percentage of the entire e-mail volume that consists of spam.
eXpurgate.ASP also offers a range of other functions such as comprehensive virus protection including virus outbreak detection, the mail relay function that also checks outgoing e-mail traffic, encoding via TLS and a quarantining function.
