HD DVD-R Single-layer 15GB
Like Blu-ray, HD DVD (High Definition DVD) uses a blue laser to write and read from and to the player or recorder. A single layer HD DVD-R disc has a capacity of 15GB, with a double layer disc able to hold 30GB of data. These discs will record 2 and 4 hours of High Definition video content respectively, and a double layer disc will record over 15 hours of standard definition TV.
The major difference between the two formats is that HD DVD, created by the DVD Forum, led by Toshiba, has been developed from existing (tried and tested) DVD technology: it really is the logical evolution of DVD. This has led to shorter lead times and lower development and manufacturing costs.
HD DVD, despite using legacy technology as the basis for its existence, nevertheless boasts some pretty impressive additional features, such as the ability to provide discs with HD DVD on one side, and (standard) DVD-9 on the reverse, so that we are all able to watch the movie, regardless of the system we happen to own!
HD DVD’s unique ‘iHD’ system, will also enable the synchronisation of audio, graphic or text-based information from an online source with content from the disc, which means that soundtracks, graphics and sub-titles can be added to a movie as it plays, with the provision of an internet connection. And with managed copy, a movie copied to a computer’s hard drive can be played anywhere on a local network.
