BID key, red How does the BID system work?
Each battery is assigned a small, lightweight BID chip, which stores all relevant
data for charging and discharging the pack correctly.
To charge or discharge the battery, the BID chip is connected to a BID charger along with the battery; the BID system then dictates the parameters to the charger.
There is an alternative to the BID chip: the BID key.
The key works in the same way as the BID chip, but its format makes it easier to hold and plug into the charger.

The following charge settings are stored on the BID chip or key:
- Battery type (NC, NiMH, LiIo, LiPo, LiFe, lead-acid)
- Cell count
- Battery capacity
- Charge current
- Discharge current
- Date (e.g. first use of battery)
- Delta Peak cut-off voltage
- Cut-off temperature
