Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – May 10th 1849) was a Japanese artist, an ukiyo-e painter (a genre of Japanese woodblock prints). His works were a source of inspiration for many impressionist artists such as Monet and Van Gogh. Hokusai is best-known as author of the ukiyo-e painter of the series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" (created between 1826 and 1833) which includes the iconic and internationally recognized print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, describing the modern contrast between the force of nature and men's fragility.
