This is a brand new product. In some cases, new products come from dis-assembled new computers or larger assemblies.
New, genuine Apple service spare. This brand new Apple branded Panasonic (Matsushita) UJ-857 9mm super-slimline, slot loading, PATA (ATA/IDE) multi DVD burner offers full 8X recording speeds on DVD±R Discs and the ability to record on DVD+R Double Layer and DVD-RAM formats, including DVD±RW and CD-R/RW. This drive is slimmer than the normal 12.7mm slimline opticals used in the iBook and powerBook range and is only suitable for the black or white 13" MacBook and 15" MacBook Pro. NOT suitable for the MacBook Air or Unibody Aluminium MacBook & MacBook Pro since these require drives with a SATA interface.
Note that Apple shipped some early MacBooks with UJ-857 drives that had the DVD writing capability disabled in firmware (661-3905) thus rendering them as combo drives. The drives listed here are NOT restricted in this way. This drive can be used with OSX 10.2 or higher in conjunction with disk burning software such as Toast. Disk buring is directly supported within OSX 10.4.8 (Tiger) or later. There is no manual, software or mounting hardware included.
