- Even the most advanced, high performance stereo and home theatre systems are not immune to the digital phenomenon known as jitter. Jitter is a time domain error in the digital signal as its being transferred from your component's transport to the internal (or outboard) DAC. This clock timing error can be substantial enough to produce audible imperfections: phase distortion, increased noise floor, decreased bandwidth, and loss of clarity.
An ordinary fiber optic cable can actually increase jitter. As the digital signal travels down the cable's lightpath, the cable's low grade fiber limits the amount of light that can be transferred, while the imprecise, machined termination often cause internal light reflections and thus, more jitter.
