The Dell™ PowerConnect™ W-6000 Controller is a chassis based system enabled with pluggable PowerConnect W-6000M3 controller modules (up to four modules per chassis), hot-swappable redundant power supplies (up to three per chassis) and a hot-swappable fan tray. The Dell PowerConnect W-6000 controller addresses a wide range of wireless network mobility, security and remote networking requirements for corporate headquarters and large campus deployments.

Integrated access controller
The Dell™ PowerConnect™ W-6000 Controller acts as a head-end device for enterprise wireless networks to manage a wide range of mobility, security and network access functions. The W-6000 controller is scalable and easily installed without disrupting the existing wired network.

The Dell PowerConnect W-Series W-6000 controller is enabled by using pluggable PowerConnect W-6000M3 controller modules (up to four modules per chassis), hot-swappable redundant power supplies (up to three per chassis) and a hot-swappable fan tray all installed in a single chassis. Each PowerConnect W-6000 controller chassis can support up to 2,048 campus access points (APs) - 512 campus APs per W-6000M3 controller module.

Designed for the performance needs of 802.11n, the M3 is built on a flexible multi-core processing architecture that makes it adaptable to wireless LAN, remote networking, or network security services.

Located in the distribution layer or in the data center, Dell™ PowerConnect™ W-Series W-6000 Mobility Controllers manage complex and processing-intensive authentication and encryption, virtual private networking (VPN), Layer 2-3 networking, Policy Enforcement Firewall (PEF), Adaptive Radio Management (ARM), and the RFProtect™ Spectrum Analysis and Wireless Intrusion Protection (WIP) capabilities.

The wireless LAN configuration is virtualized and implemented in cost-effective 802.11n access points (APs) at the access layer. APs can move user traffic to Dell™ PowerConnect™ W-Series W-6000 Mobility Controllers through secure IP tunnels over a public or private transport network, and locally bridge at the access layer, depending on the end user application or traffic forwarding requirements set forth by IT administrators.

Clustering and centralized management allow large enterprise networks with hundreds of Mobility Controllers to be managed and maintained with minimal staff. A designated master Mobility Controller manages multiple local Mobility Controllers, while the AirWave Wireless Management Suite™ (AWMS) provides unprecedented control for IT staff through historical reporting and real-time troubleshooting.

Hassle-free, dependable deployment
The PowerConnect W-Series Adaptive Radio Management (ARM) technology, part of PowerConnect W-Series Controllers OS, helps optimize client behavior using infrastructure-based controls that utilize information from the centrally managed WLAN controller. ARM can adjust how WiFi™ clients interact and verify that data, voice and video applications have sufficient network resources to deliver a superior wireless experience for end users.

ARM technology:

- Maximizes performance, increasing WiFi capacity while using the full RF spectrum to expand coverage
- Automatically adapts to noise, moving away from external noise and mitigating co-channel interference
- Centralizes decision making, enabling the WiFi network to act as a whole during 802.11 channel assignments, preventing access points from channel hopping
- Displays real-time coverage, integrating an RF planning tool and live RF heat mapping and location trackin

Dell's solution works with wireless devices, such as third-party voice over IP (VoIP) handsets or wireless scanners.

Integrated wireless security
The PowerConnect W-Series controllers are an integrated wireless security platform that supports user authentication and policy enforcement, firewall, intrusion protection and centralized encryption.

W-Series Policy Enforcement Firewall (PEF)
This optional software module within PowerConnect W-Series Controllers OS, enabled through license keys provides identity-based controls to enforce security, prioritization, traffic forwarding and network performance policies. Organizations are free to set performance thresholds of various applications and enforce network access policies that specify not only who can access the network but also which areas of the network these users can access.

W-Series RFProtect + WIP (Wireless Intrusion Protection)
RFProtect +WIP (Wireless Intrusion Protection) , an optional software module within PowerConnect W-Series Controllers OS enabled through license keys, actively helps detect and disable rogue APs, man-in-the-middle attacks, DoS and other threats before they penetrate the wired network. The RFProtect + WIP module also includes a power spectrum analyzer to appraise non-802.11 sources of RF interference and their effects on 802.11 wireless LAN channel quality
